Product Owner for Hire

ABOUT THE EMPLOYER
Our client is building an AI-powered platform that digitizes, stores, and extracts intelligence from deal jacket documents. Dealers use their platform to cut audit response time from hours to seconds, surface compliance gaps before regulators do, and ask plain-English questions across thousands of deals — and get grounded, cited answers instantly.
This is a foundational domain hire.
You will serve as the Product Owner in the SAFe sense — owner of the product backlog, voice of the customer, and the person who turns dealership reality into engineering priorities. You will not be a passive requirements-gatherer. You will be deep in the work: with customers, with engineers, and with the roadmap.
You bring real operating experience from inside a vehicle dealership — specifically the back office: deal jackets, F&I documentation, audit prep and response, and the work that controllers, office managers, and compliance leads do every day. You know what is broken. You know what costs dealerships money when audits go sideways. You know what good looks like.
WHAT WILL YOU WORK ON?
Own the product roadmap. Translate customer needs and industry shifts into a prioritized backlog. Lead quarterly planning. Decide what ships, when, and why.
Be the voice of the dealership. Spend time with pilot customers — and the rest of the early cohort. Understand their workflows, their pain, their audit exposure, and their economics. Bring that intelligence back into every product decision.
Guide the engineering team on priorities. Work directly with our Senior AI Engineer and Full Stack Engineer. Write user stories. Accept stories. Sit in standups. Be present when trade-offs are made.
Stay on top of the industry. Track the FTC, NADA, state DMV changes, DMS roadmaps (Tekion, Reynolds & Reynolds, CDK, Dealertrack), and the competitive landscape. Surface what matters for the roadmap.
Influence go-to-market. Help our Growth Partners and field operations team understand what to sell, what to demo, and what to position against.
Ensure business outcomes. You are accountable for the product delivering measurable value to dealerships — cleaner audits, faster deal jacket retrieval, fewer audit findings, lower risk.
WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
5+ years inside an automotive dealership or dealer group, in roles that touch the back office: Controller, Office Manager, Compliance Manager, F&I Director, or General Manager with strong operations exposure
Deep familiarity with deal jacket workflow, audit prep and response, and the document retention requirements (FTC Safeguards, GLBA) that govern back-office operations
Working knowledge of at least one major DMS (Tekion, Reynolds & Reynolds, CDK, or Dealertrack)
Demonstrated product or operational ownership — you have led a process change, a system rollout, an audit response, or a similar initiative end to end
Strong written and verbal communication — you can write a story, run a meeting, brief an executive, and email a CFO without rework
You are already using AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Notion AI, or similar) in your daily work, and you want to push that further
ARE THERE ANY OTHER REQUIREMENTS?
Formal Product Owner or Scrum experience
Experience working with or selling to multiple rooftops or dealer groups
Background in compliance, internal audit, or risk roles within automotive
Exposure to vendor-side automotive technology (ComplyAuto, KPA, AutoAlert, vAuto, etc.)
